Board Development and Training printer friendly viewprinter friendly

In our firm’s 30-year history, we have worked with hundreds of non-profit institutions. Our experience has shown that there are two primary factors that are vital to fundraising success: meticulous planning and strong leadership. Institutions with effective boards are, by most measures, efficient and successful organizations. Too often, we see boards that are populated with individuals who are members in name only or boards that are not properly engaged in matters of governance and financial stewardship. That said, an effective board does not simply happen – it requires planning, attention, and work. To help your organization achieve board strength, the Bentz Group can:
  • Evaluate and improve, if necessary, the structure of your board
  • Review your board’s by-laws to ensure that they meet current needs
  • Develop a profile for board members that sets forth defined roles and responsibilities
  • Assess your current board members and align each individual with these defined roles, including fundraising expectations
  • Clarify the role of board members as it relates to staff members
  • Create a method for identifying new members who match the desired profile, including the use of prospect research
  • Offer effective methods for approaching qualified candidates to secure their involvement
  • Assist in developing a dynamic and interactive orientation for new members, including the production of hand-out materials
  • Organize and moderate training sessions/retreats for the board as a group (half-day, all day, or weekend) to strengthen and motivate the members
  • Provide evaluation methods to use on an ongoing basis to maintain the best possible board membership
While we are often engaged to assist boards that are in distress, we also work with effective boards that are intent on continuous improvement. The Bentz Group encourages a preliminary consultation to determine what steps are appropriate for your organization to maintain an active and committed board – or to create one.
